Rogers To Breathe Life Into Tideway Wharf

Recently submitted to London's Wandsworth Council by developer St is a planning application outlining the transformation of the present Tideway Industrial Estate, currently a drearily lustreless light industrial block, into Tideway Wharf.

The scheme has been designed by the award winning Rogers, Stirk, Harbour and Partners, and will contain 752 residential units plus a 136-room hotel.

From a certain angle it bears a striking resemblance to a flotilla of cruise liners about to be launched into the River Thames perhaps referencing the old nautical past of London.

The five riverside blocks of graduating height - ranging between 12 and 20 storeys - also boast the same flashes of design the previous two popular and commercially successful developments undertaken by lead architect Graham Stirk, namely One Hyde Park and the presently under construction NEO Bankside. As with One Hyde Park, the buildings express themselves rhythmically every two storeys, whilst the serated edges and external service shafts hark back to NEO Bankside.

Situated as it is in the dead centre of the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area, minutes from the 750,000 square metre Battersea Power Station redevelopment site and the new American, this development is but an early fore-runner of what promises to be a significant evolution of an historically under-utilised stretch of the riverbank.

St James aim to start on site in April 2011 if they can secure planning permission

The launching of iPhone has brought a big change in the perception of the people about the utility of the mobile phone. The iPhone can be carried everywhere and is more portable than the lap top. The iPhone application development has added a new dimension to the social networking. Some of the mind boggling applications of the iPhone with reference to social networking are as follows.

The Viscount continued in BEA and, later, British Airways service until early 1985, when they were withdrawn from service, eventually being passed on to charter operators such as British Air Ferries (later British World). After a life extension programme on the airframes, the Viscounts continued in service both as a passenger aircraft (until early 1997), and freighters, able to carry seven tonnes of payload, a useful amount in the market. The last British-owned Viscounts were withdrawn and sold on by the then operator British World Airlines for use in Africa in 1997.
