1. The first step in becoming a lawyer is to achieve your four years of undergraduate degree. A Bachelor's degree is prerequisite to take admission in almost every law college with few exceptions. Normally, students at law schools come from different educational backgrounds. It is not necessary to choose any particular major for your law study. However, if you are planning to become a lawyer by profession, choose courses that improve your analytical, verbal and reasoning skills as these are important part any lawyer's career.

2. The second step is to pass the LSAT test with good score. The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) focuses on checking your verbal, problem solving, analytical and reasoning skills. Also there is a section that checks your writing skills. In order to score good in the test, you can join any prep course or prepare on your with the help of prep material.

3. There are almost 199 approved law schools and you can choose from them the schools where you want to apply. You can get the list of these schools and their admission procedure on the Law School Administration Council's website, i.e. Gather all the required documents like school records, LSAT scores, letter of recommendation, admission essays, statements of motivation and a detailed resume to accompany your admission file.

4. You will have enough time between the admission process and the starting of law school in fall session. So, you can utilize your summer time to gain some work experience by doing internship or part time job in any law firm. This will help you understand the professional environment and how things work.

5. You have to work really hard at law school. don't take it casually as it require a lot of reading and studying cases and spending much of your time in library, preparing assignments. You have to keep pace with the teachers. An independent study is a key to get good grades.

6. First year of law school is based on basics learning of the legal system. However, in second and third year, you are allowed to take the courses related to your area of specialization. In your case, you need to take courses about malpractice law.

7. Getting an internship or part time job while still at law school will be a big bonus for you. Visit few law firms in your area which deal with malpractice law cases.

8. Earn your Juris Doctor degree and start preparing for bar association exam. It is perhaps the toughest test for lawyers and therefore need a thorough preparation. You have to pass this exam in order to earn your license.

9. Once you have passed the bar exam, state will give you the license so that you start practicing law as a marine lawyer.
